Activated alumina is a porous, highly dispersed solid material with a large specific surface area, excellent adsorption capacity, surface activity, and thermal stability. It is widely used as an adsorbent, desiccant, catalyst, and catalyst carrier.
According to its physical appearance, activated alumina can be classified into four main forms:
1. Spherical Activated Alumina
Characteristics: Small spherical particles with diameters typically ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm. They exhibit good flowability and uniform bulk density.
Advantages: Low bed pressure drop, high resistance to powdering, and easy handling during loading and unloading.
Applications: The most common form of activated alumina, extensively used in adsorption drying processes and as a catalyst carrier.
2. Cylindrical (Extruded) Activated Alumina
Characteristics: Cylindrical pellets with diameters typically between 1.5 mm and 6 mm.
Advantages: High mechanical strength and excellent abrasion resistance.
Applications: Primarily used as a catalyst support in fixed-bed reactors, especially under conditions requiring high gas or liquid flow rates.
3. Powdered Activated Alumina
Characteristics: Micron- or nano-sized fine powder.
Advantages: Extremely high specific surface area and strong surface reactivity.
Applications: Used as a raw material for catalyst preparation, ceramic additives, and coating fillers; also serves as a precursor for producing other forms of alumina.
4. Monolithic / Honeycomb Activated Alumina
Characteristics: Formed into structured blocks with regular channels.
Advantages: Very low pressure drop and high mass transfer efficiency.
Applications: Commonly used as a carrier for automotive exhaust catalysts and in industrial gas purification systems where low pressure drop is critical.
Activated alumina is not a single, uniform product but rather a diverse family of materials.
By varying its physical properties, chemical additives, and preparation methods, different types of activated alumina can be tailored to meet specific application requirements.
