In air dryers, molecular sieves and activated alumina are the preferred adsorbents. Both can effectively adsorb moisture and are capable of regeneration for repeated use. However, oil substances (such as lubricants and oil vapors) can adhere to the porous surfaces of activated alumina and molecular sieves, blocking their pores. Oil contamination is difficult to fully volatilize at standard regeneration temperatures, leading to irreversible pollution.
Once contaminated with oil, the adsorbent’s adsorption capacity declines, resulting in an elevated dew point and reduced drying efficiency of the compressed air.
Therefore, it is critical to minimize the oil content in compressed air or other compressed gases. This can be achieved by using oil-free compressors or implementing pre-filtration measures, such as installing high-efficiency filters (e.g., coalescing filters or activated carbon filters) to remove oil mist and liquid oil.
