Origin of the Name “Zeolite” and the Development of Zeolite Molecular Sieves

In 1756, Swedish scientist Cronstedt discovered a unique mineral in natural ores—zeolite. When heated, zeolite releases a large amount of adsorbed water, producing a boiling-like phenomenon, hence the name. This discovery marked the beginning of zeolite science.

Over the next century, scientists gradually unveiled the microporous structure and adsorption characteristics of zeolites, laying the foundation for their applications. However, the real breakthrough came in the 1940s when British chemist Richard Barrer successfully simulated the natural formation environment of zeolites and, using the hydrothermal synthesis method, prepared the first synthetic zeolite molecular sieve—ushering in a new era for zeolite research.

From the mid to late 20th century, zeolite molecular sieves experienced explosive growth. Owing to their exceptional catalytic performance and shape selectivity, they became key materials in petrochemicals, environmental protection, and energy. Today, zeolite molecular sieves are widely applied in catalytic cracking, exhaust gas purification, wastewater treatment, and gas separation, continuing to drive green chemistry and sustainable development.

Looking ahead, with advances in computational materials science and green synthesis technologies, zeolite molecular sieves will play an even greater role in carbon neutrality, clean energy, and high-end chemicals. From geological minerals to core industrial materials, the century-long journey of zeolite innovation continues.
