The Harm of Fluoride and Defluoridation Using Activated Alumina Technology

Fluoride is an essential trace element for the human body, but excessive intake can lead to dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, and even impaired intellectual and skeletal development. The World Health Organization (WHO) stipulates that the fluoride concentration in drinking water should be below 1.5 mg/L. Therefore, efficient defluoridation technologies are critical for ensuring safe drinking water.

Activated alumina defluoridation is a mature and efficient water treatment method widely used in drinking water purification and industrial wastewater treatment. Its advantages include strong adsorption capacity, high chemical stability, and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for water treatment systems of various scales.

Activated alumina removes fluoride from water through chemical reactions between fluoride ions and the alumina surface, mainly involving two mechanisms:
• Adsorption: Activated alumina possesses numerous pores and surface hydroxyl groups that adsorb fluoride ions, forming stable aluminum fluoride compounds.
• Ion Exchange: As an anion exchanger, activated alumina allows fluoride ions to replace sulfate ions on the alumina surface under acidic conditions, forming aluminum fluoride and releasing sulfate ions.

By scientifically applying activated alumina defluoridation technology, the safety of drinking water can be effectively ensured, reducing the risk of fluoride poisoning.
JOOZEO offers high-quality products and professional technical support for fluoride removal applications.
